"Take a Tea Break"
8th August, 2014
It’s that time of year when “normal” schedules are out of sync. It’s a great time of year for getting out of the usual routine and being flexible but it’s also a time of the year when we focus on “other stuff” and run the risk of not focussing on ourselves. Particularly when it comes to balancing our own needs with the needs of those we love and care for.
We all live busy lives… there are always things to do, demands on our time and often seemingly not enough hours in the day… but balance is equally important. When you’re “running on empty” you become tired, lack focus, and generally don’t perform as efficiently as you would if there were some “fuel in your tank”.
This applies to the fuel we put inside our bodies… the WLR plan allows for freedom of choice but steers us in the direction of “good fuel”…
Of course we can fill ourselves up with sugary, alcoholic, fat-filled food and drink and the tank will seem “full” but it’s an illusion…. It isn’t quality fuel that will keep us going for any length of time and after the “high” of the instant fix comes the “down” of rapidly dropping sugar levels (and often the psychological “down” of beating ourselves up for not having chosen something that would have better “long term” effects. Not only in terms of weight loss but in terms of raising your energy levels and giving your body the nutrition that it needs and deserves…not a second-rate “quick fix”).
“Fuel in the tank” is an important aspect of the WLR process when it comes to nutrition…. But “fuel in the tank” is also important when it comes to our psychological and emotional wellbeing, and if we are only nourishing our “physical” need but leaving other aspects of our wellbeing severely malnourished then we will never be able to reach our full potential.
There will always be items on your “to do” list and some will be more pressing than others…. But often we impose our own timetables on ourselves and things that we should do become things that we have to do… NOW! We push ourselves with unnecessary deadlines, we mentally keep stacking up our life “in tray” and never ever factor in a life “tea break”…
Yes the ironing needs to be done…. Yes I like to do it on a Sunday (it’s a chore I loathe but my mum told me when I was younger that you should always do something once a week that you hate - just to make you appreciate all the stuff you don’t hate… and it works). I get hot and hassled and bad tempered…. But I make sure that once the ironing is done I run myself a lovely luxurious bath, put the radio on, lie back and recharge my batteries for forty minutes.
Once there is fuel in all of my various tanks I find that I’m re-energised and invigorated and full of focus. It helps me in my life and on my weight loss journey.
So as you’re preparing your wonderful weight loss meals today ask yourself how to intend to nourish the “whole” you. Make a commitment to a tea break…. And make sure you keep it. You owe it to yourself.
