A Recipe for Success

June 27, 2014

Lovely Husband is a very happy husband. His favourite dessert has reappeared on the menu. He loves this particular pudding and whilst we haven't been depriving ourselves of a weekly "sweet treat", we don't often indulge in dessert after dinner. However, thanks to the wonder that is the newly-released WLR recipe book, his taste buds are once again being tickled by tiramisu and my weight loss is still going wonderfully well.

"I've written in the past about how useful I've found the WLR recipe database. Whatever the occasion I know I can peruse it and come up with tasty ideas which won't wreck my weight loss journey. It's a brilliant resource and I know I'm not the only to make use of it.... "

But...

Sometimes it's hard to find something that's quick and simple when you have so much to choose from which is why when the email hit my inbox declaring that quick, simple, tasty and "faff-free" recipes had been put together in a handy book I did get quite excited.

I must confess that I did have a look through it with mild suspicion to begin with. I too have followed television programmes which have assured me that I can produce Michelin-Star quality food in a matter of effortless minutes... only to be discovered sobbing in the corner of the kitchen sitting in chaos when the so-called "quick and easy" has turned into "time-consuming-and-traumatic".

However I was wrong to view "Faff-Free" (as it's now referred to here at Hudson HQ) with such negativity.

"It really does do what it says on the cover."

It even sets the recipes out in a "speed of getting it to the table" format – with the quickest at the front working through to those that take thirty minutes... which are the "longest" in the book but still a heck-of-a-whole-lot quicker than the promised "meals in half-an-hour" from a well-known chef.. (which would have taken half an hour if I had kitchen staff to help prepare and cook and a kitchen porter to do the mountain of washing up afterwards...).

I decided to put it to the test and as LH has had a pretty stressful few weeks decided to make tiramisu as a surprise for him.

"It was a breeze. I didn't have to go into every "quirky" shop in the county in search of strange hard-to-come by ingredients; I didn't have to buy a whole host of gadgets in order to follow the instructions; I didn't need an expert standing by to help me with the complicated bits (there aren't any!) and I didn't need to feel guilty as I tucked into tiramisu which was utterly delicious but which didn't sabotage "Project Find-My-Waist-Again". (LH says he would have no idea it was WLR-compliant if I hadn't told him)."

One of the most important aspects of my weight loss journey is that I change my habits. In the past "changing habits" has meant living on lettuce, chicken and tuna; not allowing myself any treats; getting thoroughly grumpy and bad-tempered (I'm not good at deprivation....) and eventually it has led to me throwing in the towel and seeking out a multi-pack of Topics (other chocolate bars are available).

"What I have learned with WLR (and particular with regard to recipes) is that there is no reason to ban treats for life."

All that is required is restraint (even though they are WLR compliant, I am not going to get back into the habit of having dessert with every dinner), some fine-tuning, and knowing where to find trusted sources of information.... and "Faff-Free" is my new best WLR-buddy.

If you haven't checked it out yet you really should take a peek at it. It does exactly what it says on the cover - and if I can cook something tasty and nutritious in half an hour then anyone can (trust me... I really am not in any way blessed when it comes to the dark arts of cooking and the kitchen). It contains recipes to suit all occasions, budgets and taste buds. It includes treats which will satisfy even the strongest cravings without adding inches, and it really is simple and straightforward. Well it must be if I can follow it!

If you haven't had a look at it yet - if you head over and take a look Fad (and faff!) Free Recipes – 50 Real Food Recipes for Under 500 Calories - you'll be able to see what delights await you. As for me, I'm heading to the supermarket! It's going to be "Faff-Free Moroccan Spiced Lamb" (page 92!) for supper tonight...

Have a great WLR weekend

With a hug.
