Low Fat Chicken Breast in Sauce Meals - Tried and Tasted

The team were (again!) eager to get their teeth into something a little tempting - and cake slices seemed like the perfect treat. With so many brands offering low calorie alternatives we thought it could be time to have your cake and eat it too!

Product Mustard Chicken with Creme Fraiche Mash, Perfectly Balanced, Waitrose* Honey & Mustard Chicken with Spring Vegetable Rice, Slim-Fast Chicken in Broccoli & Mushroom with Savoury Rice, Good Choice, Iceland*

Taste/ Texture Our winning meal had it all: Big chunks of tender  chicken, a creamy mustard and leek sauce, deliciously creamy mash (that'll be the creme fraiche then - and the reason why this meal is not so low fat as the others!), great combination of tastes and textures and "just enough flavour". Must try An attractive looking dish which was full of flavour: succulent chunks of chicken, in tasty honey, mustard and onion sauce... mmm... complemented by a tasty spring vegetable rice. Definitely worth a try . Best taste for a very low fat meal. A larger than average portion size, means this "looks like a filling meal". (As it should be given the large number of calories in a portion). There was a nice sized portion of rice, creamy/tasty mushroom sauce and chunks of chicken with broccoli. Could do with a little more chicken, but overall, one to look out for.

Taste/ Texture The panel were pleased with the uniqueness: A whole breast of chicken and baby potatoes (rather than the usual rice/mash). The honey and mustard sauce was tasty, if a little watery, but just didn't shape up to its Slim-Fast counterpart, making it a slightly disappointing. This meal was the lowest in fat. The chicken was again a whole breast (but not as large as Sainsbury's!); the sauce was watery, but had lots of flavour; and the hash... regardless of an appetizing appearance, was bland. Didn't compare to the others on offer. And finally, shock, horror - the panel were devastated to discover they'd place COU last! M&S lost their magic with this one - the mash, for all its added "flavour" - was dull in comparison to Waitrose; the sauce watery and bland; the bacon pieces tasted artificial. Very disappointing.

Waitrose was a delight and an acceptable £2.99 (cos it was divine). Slim-Fast was surprisingly tasty and at only £1.99 this meal is definitely worth a try, whilst Iceland was nicely tasty and a very reasonable £1.49 (Probably best avoided if you're on a low calorie allowance - yep, it really is a whopping 589kcal per meal!) The others? Well, enough said!
