Get Fruity & Veg It Up
WLR Challenge
A Two Week Challenge starting 15th May to
consume at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day
May sees a focus on fruit and vegetables in the diet. Cancer
Prevention Week runs from 22nd to 28th May with a goal to
increase public awareness of the links between diet, nutrition
and cancer prevention, and to raise valuable funds for cancer
research and education programmes. The fourteenth National
Vegetarian Week (also 22nd to 28th May) aims to celebrate
vegetarianism in its broadest sense and prompt media discussion
on the topics of vegetarian food, health benefits, lifestyle and
commitment. The aim, all round, is to drive home the message
that by eating at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables
everyday you can lead a healthier life and help to prevent the
onset of life-threatening diseases.
Research has shown that most of us do not eat enough fruit
and vegetables on a daily basis. In the UK 5 a day was chosen as
a recommendation because it is believed this is achievable. Yet
we don’t achieve this on a regular basis. This Challenge aims to
change this and encourage everyone to adopt this very worthwhile
habit.
We want you to celebrate the benefits of fruit and vegetables
in your diet. Give your tastebuds an uplift by trying new
flavours and textures. Be proud and feel positive about the fact
you are looking after your health.
Tell us on the Get Fruity & Veg It Up Challenge Message Board
how you are getting on; how many portions of fruit and veg are
you eating each day; what do you like; what have you tried; how
are you incorporating fruit and vegetables into your diet?
Sing a rainbow and fill your shopping basket with different
coloured fruit and vegetables to eat each day. Red and yellow
and pink
and green, purple and orange and blue... This guarantees a good
mixture of
vitamins
and minerals in your diet.
