PRESS RELEASE - FOR RELEASE OCTOBER 2003
To Diet or To Die?
At long last the message from health professionals is getting through -
the only way to lose weight in a healthy and sustainable manner is by
eating healthily and balancing the calories. Less calories consumed, more
calories expended = weight loss.
Cutting out major food groups, Atkins style, in an attempt to lose
weight can seriously damage health. Obesity expert, Dr Jeremy Sims points out "Any changes in your eating habits for weight loss must be
agreeable with long term health. It's also important to ensure that
subsequent maintenance at a healthier weight are sustainable for life."
Sims goes on to point our that recent studies have highlighted the fact
that long-term carbohydrate restriction can increase the risk of
osteoporosis, with attendant risks of bone fractures, spinal collapse and
nerve damage. Alongside this, Atkins limits the intake of plant-derived
chemicals which have a strong association with lower rates of cancers,
heart diseases and other disorders.
Foods disallowed with Atkins include fruit and vegetables and
wholegrains. These foods include flavenoids, cartotenoids and antioxidants
which form an essential part of an healthy diet. The diet is also known to
put extra stress on the kidneys, which can lead to kidney stones and more
serious damage.
Readers are invited to try out the calorie and nutrition databases and
tools at
www.weightlossresources.co.uk with a free, three-day trial.
