Lasagne brings home thoughts of
layers of pasta and cheese in a creamy sauce with lashings of meat and
dressing… all those calories! See how our panel got on with seven
different brands, some full fat and some low calorie. Remember, our panel do
not know up-front whose brand they are tasting.
Lasagne, Be Good to Yourself, Sainsbury's*
Looked good and tasted good! You were obviously eating 'lasagne'.
Good portions and loads of layers. Our panel were surprised when
shown this dish was a low-fat option. We have seen that
some of the low-fat dishes can be watery and lacking in flavour in
comparison to full-fat options, which can make you feel 'deprived'.
However this dish unanimously held its own with all brands.

Beef Lasagne, Weight Watchers from Heinz*
The portion size (300g) for a main meal was deemed poor -
definitely not enough for an adult's main meal. However, for flavour
and taste all the panel thought it was excellent and not an obvious
low-fat dish. Good mixture of textures and tastes.

Lasagne, Bird's Eye*
A spicy taste to this lasagne which was positively received.
Good colour. Adequate portions, loads of tomatoes and one of the
better dishes tasted.

A thick and creamy almost heavy topping. A good colour. In comparison with the other dishes lacking in
taste and flavour.

Lasagne, Healthy Eating, Tesco*
Poor colour and not a real flavoursome or tasty lasagne. A strong
pasta taste above all else. Obvious amounts of vegetables.

Lasagne, Healthy Choice, Asda*
A bland appearance. Tasteless and runny and an obvious low-fat
dish. The panel agreed it tasted like a bland cheese and tomato pasta
dish.

Conclusion
We have found in the past that low fat options can be
watery and lack flavour and taste. Our panel were pleasantly
surprised to discover two which upheld their own — Sainsbury's Be Good to
Yourself and Weight Watchers — proving you can have your lasagne without consuming loads of
unwanted calories!
