Information Sources

Most basic food items come from McCance & Widdowson’s Composition of Foods data, supplied by The Stationery Office (formerly HMSO). These have been supplemented with data from the USDA database. Information on Branded foods has, in the main, been supplied by manufacturers. Where it has not been possible to obtain information from manufacturers, information has been taken from packaging.

Accuracy of Data

Our inputting and verifying procedures mean that errors are kept to a minimum, however they do occasionally get through. We are always grateful to be told about errors – please email fooddata@weightlossresources.co.uk if you notice or suspect any errors. Calorie values given for food items are ‘typical’ values, which means there may be small variations depending, for example, on how and where a food is grown, or how it is processed. Manufacturers sometimes make changes to their recipes and/or preparation methods. Weight Loss Resources contacts manufacturers regularly for updated information.
