Vegetarian Diet Leads to More Weight Loss

Could going veggie help you shift more pounds?

A vegetarian diet tends to be low in fat, with staples of fruits, vegetables, grains nuts, beans and pulses - choosing to go meat free can still give you all the nutrients you need, but can it aid weight loss?

A recent review that looked at the results of 12 diet trials revealed that people following vegetarian diets saw a bigger weight loss than those that ate meat. People following a vegan diet lost even more weight.

This review carried out by Ru-Yi Haung of E-Da Hospital in Taiwan, recently published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, looked at 12 independent diet trials involving 1,151 dieters.

The trials compared vegetarian diets against other eating plans including Atkins.

Overall the studies showed that people following a vegetarian diet could lose up to 4lbs more than dieters eating meat, with vegans losing a further 1lb.

Huang suggests the favourable results seen by people following a vegetarian diet were down to the intake of whole grains, fruits and vegetables which have low GI values and are rich in fibre.

Further studies are called for to explore the effects of the vegetarian diet on weight loss and cardiometabolic risk.

Should I become a vegetarian?

Whilst there seem to be weight loss and health benefits of adopting a vegetarian diet, just deciding you are going to be a vegetarian isn’t going to make you lose weight.

A vegetarian diet still allows you to eat crisps, chocolate and other treats that trip us up when we’re trying to diet.

However there is a lot to be said for a calorie controlled diet consisting of lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains, although you don’t have to say goodbye to meat completely.
