It’s well known that women who are overweight or obese may struggle to get pregnant. But now new research reveals a weight problem may also reduce fertility in men.

The study, published in journal Epidemiology, found that a weight gain of just an extra stone and a half in men was linked to a 10 percent reduction in fertility.

Dr David Schwartz, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Services in America, which conducted the research, says, “This study provides data on some additional health problems associated with obesity. Preventing obesity can improve men’s overall health, perhaps even their reproductive health.”

WLR says:

This study shows how important it is for both partners to be in good shape when it comes to trying for a baby.

Losing weight together can also help to keep you both motivated – and it means you won’t end up cooking separate meals.

Bottom line: getting the whole family involved in eating healthier meals and taking more exercise will benefit everyone’s health and waistlines – and may even help to add another new member to your brood!
